【摘要】
Widgets, portable chunks of code that can be installed within web pages, are not recent phenomena. However,
their use in mobile is generating excitement as a means of improving users’ experience of Internet services on
mobiles where viewing space and time is constrained. Consequently, a growing number of mobile browser
vendors, including Openwave, Opera and Nokia S60 have moved to develop support for widgets in their
browsers. In addition to improving ease of access for users, widgets provide a means of expanding the range and
diversity of applications through their use of common development tools. AJAX is emerging as the preferred
framework for widget development, a trend being assisted by its use within the iPhone Safari browser. It appears
likely that advertising and sponsorship will form the basis for the monetization of widgets but it remains highly
challenging to size the market in terms of revenues that mobile widgets could generate in the mid to long term.
However we do expect the supply of mobile widgets to grow rapidly in the next 18 months, and believe that
revenues from serving adverts into widgets could reach several hundred million dollars within 2 years.
